Resurrección – Craig Russell

This post is also available in: Spanish

The third one in the Jan Fabel series. What’s most striking after reading them is that the protagonist doesn’t really like his job, he got into it because his girlfriend was killed; he actually was going to be a historian. This explains why he became a police officer, but not why he continues to be. He has a terrible time, he gets depressed and he depresses the reader. He’s the most killjoy character that I have come across, together with Erlendur Sveinsson, the policeman from Arnaldur Indridason’s novels.

On the other hand, the plots, including this one, are fine and the investigations are correct. The excessive and meticulous descriptions of the city of Hamburg are too much in my opinion since, in most cases, they don’t contribute anything to the development of the plot.

There’s suspense until the end, although you can suspect the identity of the murderer and, as in the previous two, this novel is conclusive. The case is over and the book is over. There’s no conclusion on certain matters that remain open, such as Fabel’s resignation from his position or his relationship with his girlfriend.

I still have to read the fourth of the series, out of the ones that are published in Spanish. I guess it will be along the same line.
